A site can be ready for groundworks, steelwork or fit-out and still lose valuable time because the electrical supply has been treated as an afterthought. Temporary power for construction sites is not simply a generator and a few extension leads. It is a planned electrical installation that must support changing work areas, demanding equipment and a workforce operating under real programme pressure.
For contractors, developers and project leads, the objective is clear: provide enough safe, reliable power from day one, document it properly and adapt it as the build progresses without creating delays or unnecessary risk.
Start with the site programme, not the equipment list
The right temporary installation depends on what the site will need at each stage. Early works may require modest supplies for welfare units, security lighting, charging stations and small tools. Once the project moves into structural works or fit-out, demand can increase quickly with hoists, cranes, pumps, welders, drying equipment, temporary heating and multiple subcontractors working at once.
A proper assessment considers the anticipated load, the location of the point of supply, cable routes, distribution points, welfare provision and the likely duration of each phase. It should also account for whether a permanent network connection is available in time. Where it is not, a generator, battery storage or a hybrid arrangement may be the practical answer.
Do not size a supply by adding up every nameplate rating and hoping for the best. Diversity can reduce the expected simultaneous demand, but it must be applied by someone who understands how the site will actually operate. A tower crane, electric heater bank and dewatering pump may all be needed at the same time. Underestimating that reality leads to nuisance tripping, damaged equipment and disruption to the programme.
Design temporary site electrics for change
Construction sites change weekly. Access routes move, compounds expand, floors are handed over and contractors bring in different equipment. A temporary electrical design must make those changes manageable rather than leaving cables and distribution boards in positions that no longer suit the work.
Distribution equipment should be suitably rated for the environment and positioned where it can be accessed, inspected and isolated safely. Where possible, plan logical zones so that a fault in one area does not take out welfare facilities, security arrangements or critical pumps elsewhere on site. Clearly labelled circuits and boards also reduce the time spent tracing supplies when work needs to be isolated.
Cable management deserves the same attention as the main supply. Cables run across vehicle routes, doorways or walkways are vulnerable to crushing, cuts and trip hazards. The safest route may be overhead, protected at ground level, or diverted away from traffic altogether. The answer depends on site layout, public interfaces, weather exposure and how frequently the route will change.
Temporary power must also work alongside temporary lighting. Poorly lit access routes, stairs and work areas increase risk, particularly during winter starts and late finishes. Emergency arrangements need consideration too, especially where workers could be left in darkness after a supply failure.
The supply source affects more than cost
A mains connection is often the preferred long-term option because it can provide stable capacity and reduce fuel management. It can, however, involve lead times, network requirements and a connection point that does not match the earliest working areas.
Generators offer flexibility and can be deployed quickly, but they require fuel, maintenance, noise control, emissions planning and secure positioning. Running an oversized generator at light load can be inefficient; running an undersized unit risks poor performance and outages. Hybrid systems and battery storage can reduce generator runtime in suitable applications, particularly where overnight loads are relatively low or noise restrictions apply.
The decision should be based on programme, demand profile, available space, local restrictions and the cost of an interruption - not solely the daily hire rate.
Compliance is built into the installation
Temporary electrical systems remain subject to the same expectation of competent design, installation, inspection and maintenance as any other workplace electrical installation. The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require electrical systems to be constructed and maintained to prevent danger. On construction and demolition sites, BS 7671 includes specific requirements under Section 704.
In practical terms, that means the installation should be designed and installed by competent electrical professionals, with suitable protection against electric shock, overload, short circuit and environmental damage. Appropriate RCD protection, earthing arrangements and isolation are fundamental, but the exact specification must be selected for the installation and supply arrangement.
Construction conditions are particularly unforgiving. Moisture, conductive structures, mud, vibration, mechanical damage and frequent movement all increase the likelihood of defects. Equipment that may be acceptable in a clean office environment is not necessarily suitable for exposed site use.
Documentation matters just as much as the physical installation. Keep the relevant electrical certification, test results, circuit information and records of inspections available on site. These records help the principal contractor demonstrate control, give subcontractors confidence in the supply they are using and provide a clear baseline when the site changes.
Inspection must keep pace with site activity
A temporary installation is not a fit-and-forget service. Visual checks should be part of routine site management, with defects reported and dealt with promptly. Damaged plugs, split cable sheaths, broken enclosures, missing covers and improvised connections need immediate attention, not a note for a later visit.
Formal inspection and testing intervals should reflect the installation, environment and level of use. High-traffic areas and equipment exposed to harsh conditions may need more frequent attention than a locked, dry distribution room. Portable appliances also need to be managed through an appropriate inspection and testing regime; a PAT label does not make an item safe indefinitely, particularly when it is being moved and used heavily.
Site teams should know who is authorised to alter the installation. Uncontrolled additions by subcontractors are a common cause of overloaded circuits, poor cable routing and compromised protection. If an additional supply is required, it should be assessed, installed and recorded before it is put into service.
Common failures that cost projects time
Most temporary power problems are predictable. They arise when the installation is designed around the first week of work, when generator capacity is guessed, or when distribution is allowed to grow without control.
Four issues regularly create avoidable disruption:
Insufficient capacity for peak activities, resulting in repeated trips or an unstable supply.
Poor cable routes that expose leads to vehicle damage, water ingress or trip risks.
Distribution boards positioned without considering access, security and later phases of the build.
Missing records, unclear labelling or unauthorised alterations that make faults slower to identify and rectify.
The commercial impact can be significant. A supply failure may stop tools and plant, affect drying schedules, interrupt security systems or prevent subcontractors from completing planned work. The cost is rarely limited to the electrical repair itself. It appears in lost labour hours, delayed follow-on trades and pressure on an already tight programme.
Choose support that understands construction pressure
Temporary electrics should be procured as an operational service, not treated as a commodity. The contractor needs to understand phased construction, coordinate with the principal contractor and respond when site conditions change. They should be able to provide a clear design approach, install safely, test thoroughly and leave documentation that stands up to scrutiny.
Ask early about response arrangements, inspection requirements, capacity for future phases and who will manage alterations. Also establish the boundary between the temporary installation, generator provider, network operator and permanent works contractor. Unclear responsibilities are where delays tend to develop.
